The skin is our body’s largest organ, so it should come as no surprise that what we put on it matters. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) notes that the average woman applies a dozen products, containing a total of 168 different ingredients, every day, crazy hey!?

Unfortunately though, the beauty industry still remains largely unregulated. Can you believe that cosmetics, which include skin-care products, don’t need any approval from the Food and Drug Administration before hitting the shops. This is exactly why I chose to get BAO Skincare certified and tested, as so many brands aren’t.

There are a few ingredients that tend to spark more skin sensitivity than others. These usually include artificial fragrances, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, mineral oil and formaldehyde — some of which are added as preservatives. So I make sure that BAO Skincare does not contain them. Some sensitive skins can even be irritated by essential oils, but the oils I have chosen suit each product perfectly and are only in small amounts in the face products.

Below is a list of all ingredients used in BAO Skincare. I have explained what the ingredient is and why it is so good for your skin, but if you ever have any questions regarding skincare ingredients in BAO or other brands, please email me HERE.

Sweet Almond (Organic)

Is a mild non-irritating skin oil, which has wonderful nourishing properties. Helps to keep skin soft, smooth and supple. It can be used for all skin types.

Apricot Kernel (Organic)

This is a mild oil, especially suited to those with sensitive, inflamed, dry or mature skin. It enhances skin elasticity and sinks in beautifully.

Argan

Often called "liquid gold," argan oil is derived from nuts found within the fruit of argan trees. Argan oil is high in vitamin E, essential fatty acids and antioxidants. It is beneficial for many skin conditions, from dry skin and wrinkles to psoriasis, eczema and acne.

Avocado Oil

One of the most loved fruits to eat and the oil is incredible for skin. Avocado’s fatty acids are packed with skin-nourishing vitamins like A, D, and E. Perfect for all skin types.

Aloe Vera Concentrate (Organic)

Amazing for cooling, soothing and calming the skin. It is antibacterial and antiseptic whilst helping the skin to naturally heal. Wonderful at relieving sunburn and burns in general and is excellent for acne, eczema and psoriasis.

BaoBab (Organic)

There are so many benefits to using Baobab Oil. It offers so many benefits to the hair, skin, and nails due to the vitamins and minerals it contains. Vitamin C is commonly found in baobab, which helps relieve the skin of dullness and can lighten dark spots. Believe it or not, baobab boasts some of the highest antioxidant content. This, along with its ability to fight free radicals, makes it a perfect ingredient for aging skin.

Benzyl Alcohol

Although it's most widely known as benzyl alcohol, it can also be known as benzenemethanol or phenylcarbinol. It's derived from fruit, comes in the form of a colorless liquid, and has a slightly sweet scent. As a multifunctional ingredient, you can spot benzyl alcohol on the ingredient label of many different skincare, cosmetic, and personal products, such as moisturizers, lip balms, face washes, and even makeup. It is part of BAO’s Preservative Eco.

Berry Wax

The perfect creamy alternative to the non vegan beeswax used in most lip balms.. Berry Wax is 100% vegetable-based, so vegan and is also certified Kosher and Halal friendly. Harvested from the fruits of the Sumac Tree, the wax is extracted by hot water from the skin of the fruit and further refined by filtration and absorption method.

Calendula (Organic)

Well known for its calming, anti-inflammatory effects on the skin. Such a gorgeous plant oil, it helps to soothe and heal irritated skin and promotes new cell growth. Ideal for all skin types, especially hyper sensitive skin.

Chamomile Water (Organic)

Wonderful at calming and soothing the skin, in addition to reducing redness, blemishes, and signs of aging. Chamomile calms redness because of its anti-inflammatory properties. This makes chamomile a great ingredient for people who have sensitive skin, as well as inflammatory conditions like rosacea. Decreases signs of aging: The polyphenols and phytochemicals in chamomile are known to speed up cell regeneration, reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars. As if these weren't enough reasons to get on board with chamomile in skincare, these polyphenols also fight against harmful free radicals, protecting our skin from environmental damage and slowing signs of aging. This is why it the main ingredient in Recovery Face Cream.

Cane Sugar (Organic)

Containing glycolic acid, a natural alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), cane sugar works to slough off dead skin cells and make way for healthier, glowing skin to show through. Glycolic acid is the smallest hydroxyl acid molecule, so can penetrate the deepest and fastest. Because of this, it is known to be the most effective at stimulating collagen and thus helping reduce wrinkles. The resurfacing element helps to correct any sun damage or pigmentation and smooth the surface of the skin, whilst also fighting against acne and blemishes. Also being a natural humectant and antioxidant, sugar absorbs moisture from the environment and binds it to your skin, keeping it plump and hydrated, so well protected against toxins and any harsh weather.

Coco Betaine

Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) is a chemical compound found in many washes. CAPB is a surfactant, which means that it interacts with water, making the molecules slippery so they don’t stick together. When water molecules don’t stick together, they are more likely to bond with dirt and oil so when you rinse away the cleaning product, the dirt rinses away, too. In some products, CAPB is the ingredient that makes lather, without any sign of nasty SLS’s! Cocamidopropyl betaine is a synthetic fatty acid made from coconuts, so products that are considered “natural” can contain this chemical.

Cameillia (Organic)

Cameillia is a stunning pink flower mostly found in Asia, the Himalayas and Japan. This oil is rich in antioxidants, such as vitamin E. It is a good source of essential fatty acids, particularly omega 3, which helps to lock moisture to the skin. Very high in linoleic acid, which improves skin’s elasticity and gives the skin a glossy luminescence. It has excellent skin rejuvenation properties.

Cetyl Alcohol

Cetyl alcohol is what helps prevent creams from separating into oil and liquid. It’s a white, waxy substance made from cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol, both fatty alcohols. The one in BAO is made from coconuts and they help create smoother creamy creams.

Citric Acid

Citric Acid is an alpha/beta hydroxy acid found naturally in citrus fruits such as lemons and limes. In skincare formulations, Citric Acid has protective antioxidant, and corrective anti aging effects helping to reverse visible signs of photodamage.Citric Acid works by exfoliating the upper layer of dead skin cells to help clean pores, even skin tone and soften and smooth the skin. AHAs can also be used as pH adjusters. pH adjusters are ingredients added to products to ensure they are mild and non-irritating – not too acidic (low pH) or too basic (high pH). Most recently, Citric Acid has also been found to be important in healthy skin barrier function by maintaining the optimum level of pH in areas of the skin which are essential for normal skin barrier function. In all washes.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil is rich in natural antioxidants, particularly Vitamin E. A very good emollient for skin care products, it is scent free and does not smell of coconuts though.

Cocoa Butter (Organic)

Cocoa butter is especially good for dry skin, it nourishes, softens soothes and protects. It contains stearic, palmitic and oleic acids. It is obtained from the roasted seeds of the cocoa tree, these are the same seeds that give us cocoa and chocolate and it literally smells like chocolate, try Lip Saviour mmmmm

Coconut Butter (Organic)

Coconut Butter has a distinctive coconut aroma. It is solid at room temperature but melts to an oil in the warmth of your hands. It is great for moisturising and protecting the skin. It promotes skin elasticity and fights free radical damage to help maintain a more youthful complexion. It is suitable for all skin types but is especially beneficial for dry, flaky skin, and skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis. It is rich, sensuous and luxurious and it has a high level of slippage which makes it ideal for massaging over hairy skin.

Decyl Glucoside

Decyl Glucoside is a very popular ingredient these days because it comes from coconuts, so it's natural, and it's also bidegradable. You'll commonly find it used as a detergent/cleanser and sometimes it's labeled ambiguously as "non-ionic surfactant" which means that it has a neutral (no) charge, and it lowers the surface tension of water.Decyl Glucoside is obtained from 100% renewable raw materials, through a combination of plant based fatty alcohol, decanol which is derived from coconut and glucose. Decyl Glucoside is a mild, and gentle, surfactant and because it does not dry the skin it is ideal for the formulation of personal hygiene and toiletry products. It helps a wash foam, but is always gentle and mild, especially suited for dry and sensitive skins.

Epsom Salt

The two main ingredients of Epsom salt are magnesium and sulfate. It is believed the combination of both ingredients stimulates detoxification pathways. Magnesium is a natural substance that aids a variety of bodily functions, including the removal of toxins.

Frankincense (Organic)

My favourite essential oil! It has toning, brightening and rejuvenating magic powers. It improves skin tone, treats ageing skin and wrinkles. It slows down the appearance of wrinkles and also reduces the extent of wrinkles that have already formed. It also has the ability to calm and lift the spirits, when feeling stressed, tired and overwhelmed.

Geranium (Organic)

This is a beautiful balancing essential oil, making it suitable for dry or oily skin types. Soothes dry and inflamed skin, perfect for sensitive skin and it’s a great treatment of oily skin and acne too.

Grapefruit (Organic)

Yummy to eat, smell and use in skincare. It cleanses, cools and brightens, and is suitable for all skin types. Grapefruit essential oil is wonderful in body products as it helps to reduce cellulite and fluid retention, due to its diuretic, detoxifying and stimulating properties.

Glycerine (Organic)

As a sugar alcohol, glycerin draws moisture from the surrounding environment and pulls it into skin. Because of its role as a top-notch hydrator, it is the second most used ingredient used in skincare products. Glycerine is an excellent skin softener. It is humectant, which means it attracts water from the atmosphere into the skin, which ensures hydration. BAO only uses Organic vegetable-based glycerine.

Green Clay

Clay is rich in minerals and active enzymes. It stimulates the circulation, removes dead skin cells and helps to draw out toxins. It also helps to tone and strengthen the connective tissues. Green clay has a softening effect that refines the skin texture and provides hydration. This delicate clay has firming and toning elements that improve connective tissue and therefore is perfect for mature skin.

Himalayan Salt

Salt baths are a great way to relieve sore or cramped muscles, reduce cellulite and fluid retention, as well as soothing itchy skin. Mineral baths make it easy for our bodies to absorb the magnesium and other trace minerals in the salt, which can fortify bones and connective tissue that may be contributing to soreness.

Hyaluronic Acid

Not a dangerous “acid”. It’s a natural plant sugar. Nicknamed the “fountain of youth”as it has incredible hydrating properties. Results in increased skin smoothness, softening and decreased wrinkles. As we age the natural hyaluronic acid declines in our skin. Skin becomes dehydrated and the collagen and elastin fibres lose their structure. Hyaluronic acid applied to the skin, can re-establish the hyaluronic acid content to a more youthful level.

Jojoba (Organic)

Taken from the Jojoba nut, the oil softens, protects, improves suppleness and helps the skin to hold moisture. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Helping to moisturise dry skin but also balancing the over-abundance of oil in oilier skins.

Jojoba Grains

The liquid wax ester of the Jojoba plant can be turned into spherical jojoba beads. The word "jojoba" is pronounced as "hohoba". Jojoba beads are one of the best options for gentle exfoliators. Whilst the particles used in most exfoliating scrubs can vary from ground seeds and kernels which are scratchy and usually too rough for the skin or even plastic microbeads which are of course dangerous to our oceans. Jojoba beads are super popular due to being naturally sourced and really gentle for the skin.

Levulinic acid

A natural plant based acid, usually from corn, which helps to balance formulations and fight infection. It’s not really adding any benefits to our skin but essentially it ensures your product doesn’t spoil or cause infection to the skin with nasty bacteria from regular contact and use. It’s particularly important in products that don’t use pumps to dispense so look out for this in products sold in jars or bottles. Sodium Levulinate is the salt of levulinic acid and is used as a preservative.

Lavender (Organic)

Did you know Lavender is one of the most popular oils used in skincare. Some say it reminds them of their grandparents, that calming floral scent. Studies have found that it reduces stress. Others suggest it eases pain and balances the mind.

Macadamia Nut Oil

A rich oil, very high in palmitoleic acid. Palmitoleic acid occurs naturally in our skin, where its job is to maintain moisture levels. The level of palmitoleic acid is reduced with age, which results in dryer skin. Therefore a very good oil for mature and dryer skin types.

MF Emulsifier

An emulsion is a blend of water and oil, which are brought together by the use of an emulsifier – creating a homogenous blend. MF is added to the water part of the cream and this allows the oil and water to stay together, creating a beautiful creamy texture. It is 100% plant based.

May Chang (Organic)

Also known as Litsea Cubeba. It has the most gorgeous fresh, uplifting lemon scent, this is why it’s an excellent choice for use in body and hand products.

Red Mandarin (Organic)

Mandarin is one of the safest and most gentle essential oils, making it perfect for children and during pregnancy. It has calming and soothing properties making it beneficial for stress, nervous tension and insomnia. Mandarin detoxifies the body and reduces cellulite, and prevents stretch marks. It can also tighten up loose skin after losing weight or pregnancy. Very good for oily and congested skin, but also benefits a sensitive skin and mature skin. Promotes cell regeneration, tones and firms.

Neroli

Also known as orange blossom oil, one of the most delicate and luxurious oils. It’s rejuvenating properties make it perfect for mature skin, oily skin, broken capillaries, sensitive and dry skin. It also helps to tone and brighten the skin.

Orange Floral Water (Organic)

This scented water not only smells divine, it detoxifies and decongests the skin too. Calms and soothes sensitive and dry skins whilst hydrating wherever it is used.

Paypaya Seed

One of the best plant oils for stabilising oily skin and working as an exfoliant on dry areas too. Papaya also creates a natural ‘lift’ & rejuvenation of the skin. Papaya contains Vitamin A, a property that benefits skin repair through increasing the rate of new cell formation. Vitamin C is also an anti-oxidant with wonderful proteins for smoother, softer skin.

Pomegranate Seed (Organic)

Pomegranate Oil is high in antioxidants. It protects against the aging effects of overexposure to the sun, inhibits free radical damage, supports skin cell regeneration and promotes healing. Pomegranate extract works well in stimulating skin's collagen production and rebuilding its outer layers.

Prickley Pear Seed (Organic)

Prickly pear is extremely high in essential fatty acids, omega-6 and -9, and the natural antioxidant vitamin E. It’s also rich in amino acids, which stimulate collagen production to promote faster cell turnover. And finally, it also contains vitamin K, which brightens under-eye dark circles and also promotes your skin’s elasticity.

Preservative Eco

Other trade names include Mikrokill ECT, Geogard ECT and Plantaserv M.INCI: Benzyl Alcohol (and) Salicylic Acid (and) Glycerin (and) Sorbic Acid(Meets Ecocert and COSMOS Standards). A broad spectrum preservative which contains four different components: Benzyl Alcohol, Salicylic Acid, Glycerin and Sorbic Acid. These molecules are all found in nature in plants such as pine resin, rowan berries and willow bark. It is a non-paraben, non-formaldehyde, non-isothiazolone based preservative system. It is supposed to have a wide pH compatibility of pH 3-8, but it’s most effective at pH below 5.5.

Rose Water (Organic)

One of my most favourite ingredients for skincare. As it has a magical healing effect on the skin, with very good anti-inflammatory properties. Good for dry, sensitive, itchy, mature skin, heat and broken capillaries.

Rosehip (Organic)

A beautiful oil, which is very effective for cell and tissue regeneration. It is a good source of essential fatty acids, particularly omega 3, which helps to lock moisture to the skin. Rosehip oil also contains vitamin A, C and E. Making it a fantastic healing oil and great for a range of skin conditions, such as: scars, acne, eczema, psoriasis, scalds, burns, skin over-exposed to sunlight and skin pigmentation. It also helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes and mouth.

Shea Butter (Organic)

Another one of my most favourite skincare soothers. It has remarkable nourishing and soothing properties. It contains cinnamic acid, which is responsible for its healing and anti-inflammatory effects. It is also suitable for preventing or treating stretch marks during and after pregnancy.

Sorbic Acid

This acid is a safe acid, it’s present in various fruits, but it is extracted from sorbellano fruit (sorbus aucuparia). Sorbic acid helps to preserve cosmetics and is found in the Preservative Eco used in BAO products containing water and oils, specifically reducing the development of yeast and fungi.

Sweet Orange (Organic)

Zesty, fresh and uplifting, Sweet Orange brightens dull and oily skin. Whilst also being beneficial for dry, sensitive or mature skin, its rejuvenating properties help to reduce the signs of ageing. It has a general detoxifying and cleansing effect on the body.

Sodium Benzoate

Benzoic acid salt that is naturally found in blueberries, prunes, cinnamon and apple. It is used as a skincare preservative to prevent the growth and proliferation of fungi and bacteria in the products.

Sodium Levulinate

Sodium Levulinate is a 100% natural preservative obtained from starch and vegetable inulin. It is a gentle preservative proven to be able to control microorganism colonies without altering the integrity, colour or pH of other ingredients included in the final product. It is especially used in the preservation of fresh ingredients.

Sodium Phytate

Extracted from sodium salt from phytic acid, a vegetable compound found in corn. It is used in cosmetic products as a chelating agent to prevent the heavy metals.

Tamanu (Organic)

Rich and versatile, our organic tamanu oil is blended with a touch of vitamin E. It absorbs quickly and imparts a dewy glow without feeling greasy. Tamanu oil is great for mature skin that requires extra hydration, on scars and stretch marks, and as an after-sun oil.

Vitamin E/ Tocopherol

Extracted from vegetable oils. It is an antioxidant, which helps preserve the product that it’s in. It’s also powerful at combating free radical damage to the skin (sun light and environmental pollutant damage), which will help prevent wrinkles, stimulate the blood circulation and regulate the skin’s elasticity.

VE Emulsifier

An emulsion is a blend of water and oil, which are brought together by the use of an emulsifier – creating a homogenous blend. VE is added to the oil part of the cream and this allows the oil and water to stay together, creating a beautiful creamy texture.

Xanthan Gum

Xanthan gum is used as a thickening agent and a stabilizer to prevent products from separating in cosmetics. It creates a gel-like texture and is also used as a carrier agent. It allows for a smooth, even application when used cosmetically. In all of the washes.

Ylang Ylang (Organic)

Ylang-Ylang oil has a beautiful sweet and exotic floral scent. It has a sedating and calming effect, and is useful in the treatment of depression, anxiety, stress and tension. It also has aphrodisiac properties. Due to its balancing action, it is suitable for both dry and oily skin types.
