It was only a few years ago that Veganism was hardly heard of, now it is everywhere! Plant based diets, clothes, beauty products and skincare are everywhere you turn. It promotes kindness to our planet and animals along with benefiting our bodies and of course our skin. You may already think that all skincare is vegan. After all, why would someone think we need animal products in our daily face cream? However, you might be surprised at just how many animal ingrediemts you can find in skin care products. From body creams to toothpaste, shampoos to scrubs. It’s not always easy avoiding such items – especially if you’re not aware of it. Here at BAO Skincare I believe that plant based ingredients, as in non-synthetics and non- animal products, are much better for the skin. I do have one exception, and this is organic beeswax, even though it does not contain animal flesh it is not vegan. But it is so nourishing for the skin and it is in my best selling product Nourish Urself.
Is vegan skin care better?
Vegan skin care products are not just better for animals, they are often kinder to our skin too. The skin is our largest organ and therefore absorbs pretty much everything we put on it. This is why BAO Skincare products contain NO chemicals, artificial preservative or fragrance and definitely do not contain paraffin or mineral oil. Another nice benefit of using 100% plant based ingredients is that they often bring a lot more goodness to the skin. This therefore helps repair and nourish your skin making to glow more.
What should I avoid?
A lot of ingredients used in the making of skincare products can be taken from either plants or animals. However, processing time is much quicker in creating the animal based ingredients, so they are often the more common choice, especially in cheaper commercial products. A few common ones to watch out for are Lanolin, Biotin, Tallow, Retinol, and Gelatin. Even though four of my BAO Skincare products contain organic beeswax ( because it is such a wonderful ingredient for repairing the skin) , the rest of my products are 100% vegan and 100% cruelty free. Many products on the market are technically vegan but are not cruelty-free as they will have been tested on animals. To really be sure that a product is both, look for the Cruelty Free logo as well. You can rest assure that all of BAO Skincare products are 100% cruelty free and I am in the process of getting them all certified too.
